Pint-sized Defenders edition!
Above is the character box I drew to supplement a cover I illustrated for Marvel's superhero team book, The Defenders. This particular issue dealt with our heroes being shrunk down to insect scale. In fact my editor specifically asked for a composition showcasing the team running away from a flurry of insects, which I thought was such a fun and playful idea it'd warrant bringing back the old character boxes that Marvel used to publish on their covers.
This is what I initially cooked up.
--I was given a list of characters I could use at first, which included Black Cat, however I couldn't find a place for her in my second sketch, hence her absence.
They went with the second sketch, so I got to work, using minimal photo reference this time, save for photos of various bugs, and some hand reference for Nick Fury:
